Abstract
Background and Objective: Crying is the first sign of life in a newborn and serves as a nonverbal language to express needs and emotions. Both crying and laughing, as manifestations of the divine, convey profound human inner messages to the world. Although some scholars, under the influence of doubt, have challenged the act of crying over the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) and denied its positive effects—claiming it causes depression—numerous studies have disproved such assertions. Therefore, this phenomenon should not be viewed solely as a negative factor. This study aims to explore scientifically and religiously the deep relationship between the medical and spiritual dimensions of crying over Imam Hossein (AS) within the Shia educational tradition, offering a novel understanding
Methods and Materials: This research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing narrative, historical sources, existing quantitative studies, and an analytical perspective.
Results: Findings indicate that crying over the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) in general, and particularly over Imam Hossein (AS), plays a fundamental role in human development, social formation, and civilization building. This role manifests across three core areas of Islamic education: cognitive (insight), affective (orientation), and behavioral (practice). Furthermore, Crying over the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) has multifaceted functions and can be considered an effective factor in approaches such as psychotherapy, meaning therapy, and others.
Conclusion: Crying over Imam Hossein (AS) encompasses not only physiological and neurobiological effects within the medical domain but also significant spiritual impacts. It enhances mental health, strengthens social bonds, raises collective awareness, fosters resilience against oppression, and improves individual tolerance.
